LEARNING OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT MEASURES: Upon completion of this independent study, you will be able to design a usable font. I will evaluate you on your ability to achieve the following milestones:

MILESTONE 1: Generate a font with characters appropriately spaced, kerned, and hinted. Due: 4/10.

MILESTONE 2: Design a composition that exemplifies the appropriate context of use for the font. Due: 5/11

MILESTONE 3: Attend individual critiques with me and be prepared to participate thoughtfully, respectfully, and according to the guidelines in the course schedule. You will exceed expectations for this milestone when you attend and participate in all individual critiques or have one absence. You will meet expectations for this milestone with two to three absences. You will fail to meet expectations for this milestone with four or more absences. Being late 3 times by 15 minutes or over will constitute an unexcused absence. Leaving early or taking a break from class for more than 15 minutes will also constitute an unexcused absence.

GRADING: You will receive an “E (Exceeds expectations)” based on how well you: follow the principles for good typographic design and professional etiquette, missing no more than 2 of the following criteria: professional etiquette, high craftsmanship, attention to detail, readable letterform, legible letterform, unified design, iterative design. Otherwise you will earn an “M (Meets expectations)”. If you fail to submit deliverables for a milestone then you will earn an “F (Fails to meet expectations).” If you receive an “F”or an “M” on Milestones 1-3, you have one week to revise and resubmit for a better grade.

YOU WILL EARN AN “A” in the course if you exceed expectations for Milestone 1-2 and exceed expectations for Milestone 3.

YOU WILL EARN AN “A-” in the course if you exceed expectations for Milestone 1-2 and meet expectations for Milestone 3.

YOU WILL EARN A “B+” in the course if you exceed expectations for Milestone 1, meet expectations for Milestone 2, and exceed expectations for Milestone 3.

YOU WILL EARN AN “F” in the course if you fail to meet expectations for Milestone 3.

Please note that I am required to give you an EWS for excessive latenesses, absences, or poor quality work. If you have questions about your grade at any time during the semester, please contact me immediately by email.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attend all required individual critiques on time. Three unexcused or four excused absences will cause your final grade to drop one letter. Four or more unexcused absences will earn you an F in the course. Being late 3 times by 15 minutes or over will constitute an unexcused absence. Leaving early or taking a break from class for more than 10 minutes will also constitute an unexcused absence. I am required to give you an EWS for excessive latenesses, absences, or poor quality work. Your absence is officially excused only when I receive a message from the Student Experience office. E-mail se@rpi.edu or call x8022 to get your absence officially excused.

OTHER COURSE POLICIES: In order to get full credit for a milestone, you must complete all parts. Failure to do so will result in a grade of “No Credit.” To pass this course, you must complete all coursework by due date and be prepared for each individual critique. Milestone deliverables are due by the date indicated in the schedule. If you receive an unsatisfactory grade on any milestone, you have one week (from the time that you receive your grade) to revise and resubmit. There will be no make-ups for missed assignments due to unexcused absences. I am required to give you an EWS for missing  or poor quality work.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Student–teacher relationships are built on trust. For example, you must trust that I have made appropriate decisions about the structure and content of the course; and, I must trust that the assignments that you turn in are your own. Acts that violate this trust undermine the educational process. The Rensselaer Handbook of Student Rights and Responsibilities defines various forms of academic dishonesty and you should make yourself familiar with these. In this class, all assignments that you turn in for a grade must represent your own work. Submission of any assignment that is plagiarized or otherwise in violation of this policy will result in a penalty of failure of the course.
