Welcome to Baohouse (pronounced Bauhaus) a virtual design studio for research on cross-cultural collaborative designing between laypeople and experts. Bao is a game played in Africa. Here it is used metaphorically to describe a virtual space that supports collaborative designing between grassroots participants and professionals. The “virtual design studio” concept has been used by other researchers for computer supported cooperative work. But these are typically specialized for professional projects (e.g. architects talking to architects). Here the intent is to create a virtual design studio dedicated to participatory development with underserved lay communities on topics related to social justice.
